Marrickville Council is encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to apply for its Marrickville Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Studio Program, which promotes the ongoing growth of arts and culture.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities contribute greatly to the cultural and artistic life of the Marrickville local government area. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Studio Program aims to enhance this contribution by providing practical support for artists,” Mayor of Marrickville Sam Iskandar said.

The program allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to use Council’s studio space at the Addison Road Centre in Marrickville for 12 months. Council will provide the space for free as part of the residency, and the artist will be responsible for furnishing and maintaining the studio.

“Council invites applications from emerging and mid-career artists and craftspeople working in all art forms, including writing, jewellery making, photography, music and visual arts. Applicants must be practising artists of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, and should demonstrate a high degree of artistic merit,” Clr Iskandar said.

Applications are due by Wednesday 18 March 2009.

For more information or an application form, phone Council’s Cultural Development Officer on 9335 2280 or email cdo@marrickville.nsw.gov.au.
