Website delivers boost to Indigenous art

Aboriginal Art Directory | 27.08.10

A website that includes the first national register of Aboriginal artists from urban areas has been launched.

Storylines has made its debut after three years of research into Aboriginal visual art in urban Australia.

It features 600 artists with a summary of their art, heritage and history.

Research officer from the University of New South Wales Tess Allas, who worked on the project, says the website has finally put Aboriginal artists on the map.

"It's the first time these artists have ever been looked at seriously. It's the first time they've been acknowledged as having something of worth," she said.

Ms Allas says it was difficult to get access to information on Indigenous artists in the past as most were not considered part of Australian contemporary art.

It is hoped the project will have implications for Indigenous arts funding policies.
