Art from top to bottom

Aboriginal Art Directory | 03.10.10

Elsewhere in the gallery, you can enjoy masterpieces of Italian printmaking dating from the mid-fifteenth century in A beautiful line: Italian prints from Mantegna to Piranesi until October 31, and opening on October 29 comes Desert Country, drawn entirely from the gallery's impressive holdings of Aboriginal art. Incredibly, Desert Country claims to be the first exhibition to chart the evolution of the now world-renowned Australian desert painting movement. (www.artgallery.sa.gov.au or 08 8207 7554).

The desert theme continues across the Nullabor and beyond at the West Australian Indigenous Art Awards on display at Perth's Art Gallery of Western Australia until January 3. Prolific octogenarian Wakartu Cory Surprise has already taken out the $50,000 Western Australian Indigenous Art Award with her stunning Great Sandy Desert works, but there's still ample time to vote; the People's Choice Award isn't announced until December 13.
