Kimberley Aboriginal Artists successful at national showcase

The newly formed Kimberley Aboriginal Artists alliance has established a successful presence amongst a national audience.

The alliance took part in the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair in August. The art fair, now in its second year, exhibits indigenous art which is produced through community based art centres, to art collectors and art lovers in a positive and professional environment.

The Kimberley Aboriginal Artists alliance brings together four Aboriginal art centres from the Kimberley who each showcased their unique artwork to attendees.

The 20 art centres that participated in the Darwin event are entirely owned and operated by the various Aboriginal communities, ensuring that artists receive maximum returns from all sales. Art centres from the Kimberley region, Arnhem Land, the Torres Strait and the Central Desert participated in the three-day event displaying paintings, fabrics, sculpture, jewellery, weaving and musical instruments.

Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre Exhibition and Studio Program Coordinator, Leah Umbagai, said that being a representative of Kimberley Aboriginal Artists at the event was a wonderful experience.

“Combining four major art centres from the Kimberley region presented us with a great opportunity to exhibit the unique and diverse range of indigenous art styles from the Kimberley,” she said.

“It was an extremely valuable experience because it gave each art centre exposure to a wider audience including indigenous art dealers from throughout Australia, and the general public who are passionate about indigenous art and culture.

“There was an enormous amount of interest in the alliance with people wanting to find out more about art from the Kimberley region.”
