The Southport School (TSS) on the Gold Coast is an Anglican Boys Boarding School.
They are establishing a scholarship programme commencing in 2009 to offer Indigenous students who are demonstrating potential - in the classroom, in cultural pursuits, leadership or on the sporting field - an opportunity to complete their secondary education at TSS.
From TSS:
Our aim is to provide these boys with previously unattainable opportunities and pathways to successfully complete their secondary studies and move onto tertiary studies, apprenticeships or business ventures.
Applications will be sought from Year 7 and Year 8 boys who wish to experience all aspects of a boarding community by participating in the full range of academic, cultural, spiritual, community service and sporting endeavours.
The TSS student body as a whole will benefit from this programme and we hope to see a noticeable shift in multi-cultural attitude - moving beyond tolerance towards full acceptance of not only Indigenous culture but of all other cultures as well.
The programme will be funded through the establishment of an endowment account which will finance the $14,000 required to educate and board one Year 8 student for one year. This amount will increase to a maximum of $16,000 per year per student in Year 10. Our inaugural Fundraising Dinner on Friday, 10 October 2008 will launch this exciting and rewarding new programme and all profits from the evening will be donated directly into a preserved Indigenous Education fund.
In order to raise well over and above on the evening, we will be holding auctions and raffles throughout the Dinner. I am seeking the support by way of donations of 1 to 3 pieces of artwork by well known artists which can be auctioned on the night.
I thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. Our dinner is only a matter of weeks away and we are having no luck obtaining any artworks to date. To obtain a better understanding of what we are trying to achieve, information about the programme can be viewed on our website www.tss.qld.edu.au.
