Aboriginal elders from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory created the painting of a wallaby reaching for the sky to inspire the team before the last World Cup four years ago in Australia.

The players were so impressed by the painting that they hung it in their dressing room before each match during that campaign.

They had planned to present it to French rugby supremo Bernard Lapasset at a welcome function the Federation Francaise de Rugby president hosted for the team at an indigenous art gallery in Paris overnight.

But despite having carefully packed the artwork in a special box to fly with the team from Sydney last Thursday, it went missing at London's chaotic Heathrow Airport.

Heathrow, the world's busiest international airport, has been plagued by problems this northern summer, with thousands of bags going missing.

British politicians have branded Heathrow a national disgrace while passengers have voted it the world's worst airport and newspapers have filled pages with tales from angry travellers whose bags disappeared.
