Almost 50 paintings are on display in the exhibit "New Works From Utopia" at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Downtown gallery SPACE, as part of the Trust's "Australia Festival," a six-week celebration of contemporary and indigenous performing and visual arts from Down Under.
This is a very interesting review of the exhibition.
Quoted from the article:
As this exhibit represents, for the most part the art was meant to tell a story taken from the culture's folklore and its version of the creation of the world. But it also represents its significance, mainly for ritualistic purposes and the reiteration of the tribe's vital connection to the nature surrounding it.
Furthermore, Aboriginal art was, and still is, a form of establishing history and reiterating that history. Which says a lot, considering that Australian Aboriginals represent less than 2 percent of the country's population.
