The Department of Natural Resources, Environment and The Arts (NRETA) is pleased to announce that the 2007 Exit Art People's Choice Award has been won by Myra Gorey for her work titled ‘Ltyentye Apurte Landscape'.
Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) Exhibitions Manager Wendy Wood said Myra's series of paintings was a stand-out favourite amongst visitors to the MAGNT and the exhibition received lots of positive feedback.
"Comments from the public guestbook included ‘Absolutely excellent work from such young artists' and ‘Myra's work is simply gorgeous'," Ms Wood said.
Myra Gorey said she was surprised and thrilled that her work won the People's Choice Award.
"The paintings represent the country that I live in and I was influenced by Albert Namatjira's watercolour landscapes," Miss Gorey said.
"However I prefer to use oil paints because of the strength and depth they provide."
Exit Art is a joint initiative between NRETA and the Department of Employment, Education and Training which showcases artwork produced by Year 12 visual art, craft and design students throughout the Northern Territory.
"The most outstanding works are selected for their excellence, innovation and creativity from a range of modes including painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, printmaking and digital presentations," Ms Wood said.
"From the 2007 Year 12 students 49 works were selected to be exhibited at MAGNT which opened on 15 February 2008.
"The Exit Art Exhibition also included a Wearable Art Fashion Parade for the first time, featuring the creative talent from Year 12 design students at Casuarina Senior College."
This is the last week the public can view the Exit Art exhibition which finishes on 27 April 2008 and entry is free.
MAGNT is open 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm on weekends. MAGNT is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday.
