Makinti Napanangka is the main winner in the 2008 Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards. They offered a total prize money pool of $A40,000 and attracted in excess of 300 submissions out of which 117 were selected for exhibition. However, there was some controversy, as a number of artists withdrew when they learned that works from the Irrunytju community via dealer John Ioannou would be selected as well. Later in 2008, a new code of conduct for the indigenous art sector is to be released, and its impact on next year's awards remains to be seen. Meanwhile several states are setting up their own awards to rival the Darwin-based ones, which began in 1984.
