Interesting article in the Sydney Morning Herald:
Black faces were missing from most of the lessons that Dianne Jones was taught at school, so the indigenous artist decided to inject a bit of humour, writes Joyce Morgan.
They are iconic Australian images: Max Dupain's photographs of beachside bathers glistening under the summer sun and Tom Roberts's painting Shearing The Rams. But what is missing from the frames?
Some black faces, says the indigenous photographer Dianne Jones. So she resolved, with her trademark humour, to fix this. Which is why she has inserted herself, tugging at the leg of her '50s-era swimsuit and grinning cheekily to the camera in Bondi or perched on a wall in At Newport. And into Roberts's painting, she has digitally manipulated images of her father and brother.
