Politicians pay tribute to renowned Arnhem artist

Both sides of politics have set aside their bickering to pay tribute to a renowned Northern Territory artist who died recently.

The artist, who for cultural reasons is currently known as Wamud Namok, was born at least 80-years ago in Arnhem Land and his work is found in galleries around the world.

In 2004 he was made an Officer in the Order of Australia.

The Chief Minister, Paul Henderson, says he was also an Aboriginal leader who helped in the fight against global warming by using traditional Indigenous methods.

"Visionary Territorians such as Wamud Namok have been working to reinstate traditional Aboriginal land and fire management practices on the Arnhem Land plateau," Mr Henderson told Parliament.
