MARRA MOORDITJ - Exciting Aboriginal Art Exhibition to be held at Kidogo Arthouse, Fremantle

From Tuesday 8th June to Sunday 11th July, Kidogo Arthouse and The City of Fremantle will host an innovative Aboriginal Art Exhibition called "MARRA MOORDITJ" (‘excellent hands’). Held at Kidogo Arthouse Gallery, Bathers Beach Fremantle, this dynamic and vibrant exhibition will highlight new works by established and up-and-coming Aboriginal Artists in Western Australia.

The adjoining gallery will have an exhibition of Senior Noongar Artist Lance Chadd Tiyllyungoo entitled Bibblumun Wiren Boodja ("Bibblumun Spirit Land"). Lance has acted as a mentor to many students and Aboriginal Artists in the Fremantle area for many years.

"Marra Moordtij" reflects the diversity of Aboriginal contemporary art. Many of the exhibitors are established artists currently being mentored by Western Australia’s best known artists and undergoing a year-long extensive training process under the mentorship of senior lecturer and Elder Lance Chadd Tjyllyungoo and Director of Kidogo Art Institute, Joanna Robertson. The accredited Certificate III Visual Art and Contemporary Craft course, called "Making A Success of Your Art for Aboriginal Artists" is now in its second year, and offers students tutelage to become the best artists they can be.

The group of artists in the 2009 and 2010 intake span a number of Aboriginal heritages, generations, and levels of artistic experience. Some had never picked up a pencil before starting the course; some had been artistic at school or in their youth; some were exhibiting artists who needed help in learning the skills necessary to become established artists. There is a level of communication, honesty and trust within the group and amongst the support network at Kidogo Art Institute which allows the students to develop their skills at an unprecedented rate. Only three months into the course, the 2010 students have already exhibited in two external exhibitions and have been encouraged to enter numerous awards, including the prestigious Telstra Awards for Indigenous Artists in Darwin.

This exhibition has been generously sponsored by the City of Fremantle and Joanna Robertson, Director of Kidogo Art Institute. Many of the artworks have been completed by Aboriginal Artists undertaking a professional development course at Kidogo Art Institute, however this exhibition is open to all Aboriginal artists living and working in the Fremantle area.

Musical entertainment and bush food will be provided by the artists at the opening on Friday 25th June at 6pm and entry is FREE and open to all. Please RSVP to Kidogo Art Institute.
