Gloria Petyarre Attending Her Exhibition Opening
Dacou Gallery Melbourne
1 July to August
Opening, Thursday, 1 July, 6:00pm to 8:00pm
Gloria Petyarre will be proudly attending her nephew’s gallery for her latest solo exhibition, at DACOU (Dreaming Art Centre of Utopia), Middle Park, Melbourne.
Gloria has moved audiences for over 15 years with her beautiful Bush Medicine paintings which pay homage to a medicinal shrub found in Utopia, 279km north-east of Alice Springs.
Gloria gained great fame when she won the Wynne prize in 1999, the first Aboriginal artist to do so, for her piece titled Leaves blowing in the wind, in which she painted the leaves of the Bush Medicine plant, softly moving in the desert breezes. The incredible sea of movement captured from the tiny leaves she deftly painted was astonishing.
More recently, Gloria has moved towards a greater abstract depiction of her Bush Medicine dreaming, using a large paint brush which is dipped into a variety of carefully selected acrylic colours. The finished piece is dense with tulip-like leaves blown across the canvas; a beautiful display of colour and depth.
Over 10 paintings will be exhibited during July at DACOU Melbourne including a selection of her Leaves blowing in the wind style, which she recently painted especially for the exhibition. Works by her sisters Kathleen, Nancy and Ada will also be on display upstairs.
