Indigenous art celebrated

Monash's indigenous culture will be celebrated during NAIDOC Week at the Highway Gallery with an exhibition and workshops for young and old.

The annual event, which celebrates the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures Australia-wide, will run from July 4-11, with the Highway Gallery holding a Circle of Friends exhibition by elders and local artists from July 4-24.

Syndal South Primary students will head to the Mt Waverley gallery for two workshops with NAIDOC artists to learn about their style of painting and practise their own Aboriginal-style artworks.

Art teacher Merrilyn Mann said her students had already practised the art form in classes and had viewed paintings in the National Gallery of Australia during a recent trip to Canberra.

Ms Mann said she hoped the students would be able to create a piece to bring back to the school from their gallery sessions.

“Anything like that, where they get some real experience with artists, is far more beneficial for them.”

A Koorie Night Market will also be held at the Clayton Community Centre during the Monash Council’s week of NAIDOC celebrations, showcasing indigenous arts and crafts from 5pm on July 8.
