Regional NSW tops Indigenous tourism report

Regional New South Wales is the most frequented destination for Indigenous tourism visitors, according to a new report.

The Federal Government's Indigenous Tourism in Australia report shows over 500,000 tourists visited regional New South Wales in 2009 for Indigenous tourism.

This equals 25 per cent of all people visiting Indigenous areas across Australia.

The most popular Indigenous tourism activities were seeing Indigenous art or cultural displays, followed by visiting an Indigenous community or site and visiting an Indigenous art gallery.

Federal Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson says Indigenous tourism supports many regional communities across the country.

The report is designed to show where gaps exist in the market and where opportunities for more Indigenous tourism exist.
