A New South Wales artist has been ordered to remove an image of a sacred Kimberley Aboriginal figure from her gallery in the Blue Mountains.
Aboriginal groups reacted angrily in March when Vesna Tenody erected an eight-tonne stone sculpture of the Wandjina spirit outside her art gallery on a busy road in Katoomba.
The Wandjina is considered the supreme spirit figure by three Aboriginal language groups in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, and few artists are permitted to use its image.
Blue Mountains city councillors have now voted to have the statue removed.
