It's a long list but important to have on the record for anyone interested in the sheer size of the Aboriginal arts industry and the amount of public money that supports organisations that claim to turn over $30m a year.
Ninety-four visual arts organisations are being funded through the 2019–20 Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) program funding round just announced by Arts Minister, Paul Fletcher. Total funding is $20.81m. The Federal Government's IVAIS program has provided core operational support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and their art centres, mostly in remote Indigenous communities, for over 28 years. These organisations provide professional opportunities for around 6,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual artists and employment for more than 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts workers. Employment of the latter is a key item on most funding claims. Developing fashion also gets a guernsey – especially at the home of stuffed figurines, Yarrenyty Arltere in Alice Springs.
So welcome to hitherto unknown organisations such as Burrunju in the ACT, Karungkarni in the NT and Mardbalk Arts on South Goulburn Island, Gidarjil in Central Queensland and Gallery Kaiela in Victoria. But are there no art centres or artists in Tasmania? No funding.
Seven arts facilitator organisations support the often-lonely art centres – taking $2.38m, more than 10% of the total.
